Wireless USB drivers for Win x64

I just installed a Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter (model WUSB54G) in my Win x64 box, and it installed right from the git go. I just connected Linksys, booted Win x64, and directed the driver installer to the directory where I had extracted the Ralink drivers. The thing picked up my access point right away.

This is version 4 of the Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter. I have had version 1 for a long time before my Win x64 install, and it does not work under Win x64.

There is no way for one to tell from the box which version of Linksys Wireless -G USB adapter that is inside. It might be a crap shoot. I bought my Wireless-G from Buy.com, so I guess they don't have earlier versions.

The italicized paragraph above was in my original post. One can determine from the outside of the retail box which version of the Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter is inside by examining the number under the UPC bar code. It will show "v4" at the end of the string of numbers, or something similar.

Note that, in the .inf file that comes with the Ralink drivers, there is a list of other brands of wireless USB adapters that uses the Ralink chipset and probably works in Win x64.

I say "probably works" because I really don't know.

The string of letters and numbers, like "VID_148F&PID_9020", are the numbers you will find under the Details tab of the Properties of a device in the Windows Device Manager. The VID for my Linksys that shows up in Device Manager is the exact same one as the very last one on this page.

I do not know if any brand of wireless USB adapter listed below, other than the Linksys models, can be found or purchased in the US or elsewhere.

As a general proposition, unproven by me, if the manufacturer or brand listed below has a wireless USB adapter (a 802.11g unit), it probably has a Ralink chipset and, accordingly, will work in Win x64 using Ralink's 64bit drivers.

Perhaps others who have the other brands might post back here whether these other brands work.

Re: Wireless USB drivers for Win x64

Can you please point me at the correct driver for this?  I have the Linksys wireless adaptor which is the last on that list of yours...I just can't find the driver that includes that in the list.  The one on the Ralink website doesn't support Linksys.

Can you maybe email me the driver?  You can email me at dbrowdy (AT) gmail dot com .

    Thx!

Re: Wireless USB drivers for Win x64

Let me make it clear that the Ralink 64bit drivers are not the same as the official Linksys drivers downloadable from Linksys. In other words, Linksys does not have 64bit drivers for its wifi products, as far as I know.

I don't know what you mean when you say, "The one on the Ralink website doesn't support Linksys."

It is true that the Ralink drivers don't work with some versions of the Linksys Wireless-G. This is because all Linksys wireless adapters do not use the Ralink technologies.

It so happens that some vendors, Linksys and others, use the chipsets/controllers from private companies like Ralink. The pertinent example here is that the Linksys Wireless-G USB wireless adapter (version 4) uses the Ralink chipset, whereas previous versions of this model did not use Ralink.

So, if you have one of the models noted in my previous post, you should use the Ralink drivers instead of the vendor's drivers to get the various wifi device to work.

My experience has only been with the Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter, and no other brands that use the Ralink chipsets.

Look under the particular Linksys product that you have to try to determine which version that you have. Note that my post indiciates, in most cases, the version of the product that uses the Ralink technology. As I said, version 4 of the Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter uses the Ralink, and the 64bit drivers from Ralink will work in Win x64.

In fact, I using this particular Linksys USB wireless adapter to connect to my network and the internet right now.

Re: Wireless USB drivers for Win x64

I've discovered another wireless USB adapter model with 64bit drivers.

The Gigabyte GN-WBKD USB adapter has downloadable 64bit drivers from Gigabyte's website.

    http://http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Communication/Driver_Model.aspx?ClassValue=Communication&ProductID=960&ProductName=GN-WBKG

I have not tried this product.

Do a Froogle Google search, and you can find some online stores that sell this product.

Easy solution for Wireless LAN on x64!

There is a simple wireless solution for those who want an out of the box solution without having to hunt for third party drivers.  Linksys makes a game adapter (WGA54G) that will connect your x64 box to a wireless network.

All you have to do is connect the WGA54G to your Wired network card and configure the connection to your access point.  When the configuration is complete, you are online.

The wireless connection is outstanding, much better than with the USB Linksys I used prior to x64.

There is a catch...  The Linksys game adapter is just down the street at your local Wal-Mart, but the price tag is around $90.00.

Hope this helps those who are looking to go wireless on x64! Smile [:)]
