The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

    Hi all.

I've tried many virus checkers and firewalls and these are the best ones.

    AVG 7.1 Virus & Firewall. (www.grisoft.com)
It's simple to use, blocks incoming and outgoing just like zone alarm, I love this program.
Your PC is in your control again, I've been using it for months but no-one appears to known much about it.  Download the trial and you'll be hooked, it's about £34 for 2 years license.  Well worth it.
Works 100% on Windows XP x64. Big Smile [:D]

    Avast Virus Checker. (www.avast.com)
Bloody good virus checker, if I didn't want the firewall from AVG then I would go for this baby.
Even tells you what it's doing verbally, "virus detected" etc, very cool and only a small download.
Works 100% with Windows XP x64. Big Smile [:D]

    Zone Alarm. (www.zonelabs.com)
They took their time but at the moment they are working on Zone Alarm for x64, you can download it but I wouldn't recommend it at this stage.  Too early.
Why so slow??  AVG got there first.

I have tested other products but are rubbish, Tiny Firewall is one of them (Yuck, what were they thinking).

All in all. if you are happy with the windows firewall (blocks ONLY incoming) then Avast is your best bet and it's free unless you upgrade to the professional version.
If you want total control of your 64bit beast then it's AVG all the way.

I hope this helps some of you.

Have you tried the Eset Nod 32? I've had excellent results with it for several years now.

I have to agree that AVG 7.1 + firewall is an absolute joy to have. It uses a very small amount of resources so you will notice no system slow down at all with it running. The built in firewall is excellent and easy to configure. It also updates itself every day from speedy servers. This thing just runs perfect on X64.

You do have to buy it though but considering how long I have been using AVG's free edition, I was more than willing to throw down the cash for this thing

Excellent program! Thank you Grisoft for coming through for us often overlooked X64 folks!

    Hi everybody
I'm testing avast! Antivirus and seems almost perfect - excellent.
This antivirus don't slow the performance of my computer (isn't noticeable).
Uses very low resources, and have a lot of customization options.
At this time, I don't have any inconvenient with this software.

    Hmm, AVG the best?

Sure, it's quick... It's barely doing anything!

Sygate Online Scans showed that was true, take a look at how many open ports you got with AVG, no matter how much you tweak.

I gotta say that I like my old Symantec products... 2005 and obsolete as of today... But after I coughed up the cash for this new OS the purchase proved to be a horrible mistake and sigh, I never had the 32-Bit cd, came installed on my computer, and the store won't take back an opened OS box...

When Vista comes out next year there had better be more software and driver support for 64 or there will be a lot of angry people...

Just makin' it easy for the newbie h@ckers to read my financials.

AVG firewall picks up everything LEAVING my machine. NAT keeps stuff out. .

Heck, if I was looking for incoming protection, I would have just stuck with my crappy Windows firewall ;)

Currently using AVG 4.6 home with Nvidia Firewall sitting behind a Netgear DG834. So far so good. I used to have ZA Pro with NOD32 (32bit) on my XP Pro, which I was happy with but occasionally it could be quite slow. Obviously on my 64 bit I've had to look for alternatives. Could not get ZA64bit to install. Read a lot of negatives for the Nvidia but I thought I'd give it a go (it came with my motherboard after all - Asus A8N32SLI DeLuxe. I have not came across any difficulty in configuring it - so much so that I installed it on my XP Pro in place of ZA, it's so much faster.

Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

I just wanted to give everyone the quick heads up that AVG plus Firewall will not work on all systems.
Here is the error that I am getting:

Incompatible: AVG plus Firewall and Microsoft Windows 64 bit Edition

An error can occur on computers running the Microsoft Windows XP x64 or Microsoft Windows 2003 server x64 operating system with more then one network adapter: the kernel defect of the mentioned operating systems results in switching off the filtration of system traffic on some of the installed adapters. Due to this collision your computer might not be fully protected from external attacks. Only computers with one network adapter are guaranteed to work correctly.

The error occurs on 64 bits versions of Windows OS; the 32 bit versions are not affected by this collision in any configuration.

The technological problem does not reside in the AVG plus Firewall program, but in the Windows operating system kernel (driver) that the AVG Firewall component uses. Microsoft Corporation has been informed of this problem but the defect has not been rectified yet. In the meantime we will do our best to develop our own, independent alternative solution for these MS Windows operating systems. Since the conflict may result in your computer being less than “fully protected” by AVG plus Firewall we do not recommend further use of the AVG Firewall component, with these operating systems, until the problem is resolved.

If under the given conditions you want to ask for a refund, please contact our sales department.

Even though our product is not responsible for this problem we apologize for any inconvenience. In all cases, we are ready to resolve the situation to the benefit of our customers.

Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

I agree.  Eset's NOD32 is the best running anti-virus software yet.  [Yes you can get a 64-bit version.]  And it runs like a champ.  It is entirely automated and it doesn't use nearly as much memory as McAfee's or Norton's.  I've used pretty much all of the other anti-virus programs including McAfee's, Norton's, AVG, TrendMicro, and yet not one of them will ever pull me back away from NOD.  Not too many people have heard of it, but it is a stealthly all-star.  Try it out.

Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

    Hello 64Bloggers

I understand there is no secure firewall like norton for 64 bit.

Also i read somewhere on this site, i can link up 64 bit with 32 bit computers in a network, yes..

So if my 32 bit windows has norton 2005 and is connected to the internet, and i connect network i should be fine??

    64 bit windows-----32 bit windows++++Norton firewall------Internet.

And for the windows 64 bit i can install norton 10..?!?

Pffff will there ever come more working progs for64 bit!?, is not there a program wich can simply convert progs to 64 bit progs?

Ps 3ds max is planning a release in 64 bit!

Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

The secure firewall that I use for my PC with x64 is the firewall that can be controlled internally in my Linksys router.  You can easily network computers that are both 32-bit and 64-bit, but if you install Norton's on the 32-bit PC, it does not provide the 64-bit computer with the firewall.  The Norton's firewall does not apply to your entire network, just the computer and the ports of the computer that it is installed on.  Additionally, I am not sure what Norton's 10 that you are referring to, but I know personally that Norton Ghost 10.0 does not work on x64.   Since I am not a Symantec fan (many bad run-ins with their security suites trying to control computers) I am not really an expert on this, but I do not believe that there is anything from Norton's that works on x64.  Many companies do not support x64, but hold out.  They will eventually support it because it will eventually be the standard PC architecture.  Good luck.

The 64 bit version of norton virus edition : http://www.symantec.com/Products/enterprise?c=sysreqs&refId=805#sysreq10

And for my question again, the 64 bit computer uses the connection of the 32 bit computer wich is behind a norton firewall so why is not the 64 bit computer secure(like you said?)

Do you mean both the 32-bit and 64-bit PCs are connected to the same router ? Confused [*-)]

No my 32 bit with a usb modem(The green flat speedtouch stingray modem)pretty old hah!?anyway

The 64 bit windows is connected with single network cable to 32 bit computer, so the 32 bit shares the internet connection  with 64 bit windows.
