Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

Oh I see, well you'd think that the firewall would be in between the internet and the 2 PCs, but it's actually more like this ...

                         64 bit
    Internet ----<
                         Firewall - 32 bit.

As for 64 bit firewalls, there's this one ...

    http://www.ghostsecurity.com/index.php?page=ghostwall

I have never used it but it's 64-bit and it's free. Cool [H]

Indeed strange i thought i had a nice solution for a 64 bit windows with a windows 32 bit firewall anyway.

so if i connect my 64 bit to my 32 bit i still have to install a firewall on the 64 bit.

I will try your ghostwall, maybe sometime soon Norton comes with a 64 bit firewall.

You have a firewall on your router, is that lets say hardware?

And is it save?, maybe a buy a router modem instead of the old speedtouch usb!

all the info you gave very welcome!

If you are getting your network feed to your 64-bit computer through the 32-bit one, you don't necessarily need a firewall for your x64 computer.  However, you should focus on what the firewall on the 32-bit computer is doing and what traffic it is letting through that is coming from the 64-bit computer.  Depending on what it all is, you could be safe with only the firewall on the 32-bit computer.

Lcars says no, Reviver says yes!?

My 64 bit has a "shared internet connection" with the actual 32 bit internet computer, wich has a usb modem, so how can the 64 bit pass my firewall to the internet, and does not norton firewall also check the connection between the 2 computers?

"shared internet connection": one network cable with file sharing and printer sharing, and internet, remote desktop etc.

anyway i quess i want to be sure!?

Re: The Best Firewall and Virus Checking for x64

Maybe I am not understanding your setup properly.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that you have this set up as follows:

    64-bit PC > CAT5 > 32-bit PC (which is running Norton's firewall) > USB > DSL/Cable Modem > ISP

If my diagram is true to how you have it set up, if you manage your Norton's firewall effectively, you can properly protect your 64-bit PC.  You might have to analyze the settings a bit to get it to work optimally, but it is possible.

A good place to benchmark to see if you do properly have all ports, etc. shut down is to go to www.grc.com and run their ShieldsUp utility.  It is great for firewall and network analysis.

    Good luck.

And again for the reply and also the link!

I do know for sure that my ip blocker (protowall) does work, i mean if i surf the web on my 64 bit the ip blocker on my 32 bit blocks the same sites as when i am surfing on my 32 bit computer.

Have a nice day and a good weekend

Ps i searched for a release date on the microsoft vista page but could not find one!?, do you know a date when they are releasing the official vista windows!?

Last thing I heard about Vista officially said Jan 2007, but I believe I remember seeing a blog from a Microsoft employee saying something about it being pushed to March 2007.
